It was nothing but laughs for Josh Perlman, between this bar mitzvah boy’s very own stand-up-comedy act followed by a performance from the famous comedian @elongold ! It is so much fun to see how families creatively incorporate their children’s passions into an event. This one was a special one for sure! Mazal tov to the Perlman’s, and a special applause to Josh, for not only wowing the crowd with his bar mitzvah prayers, but his comedic skills as well.

The Rabinovitz family found a beautiful balance between celebration and reverence for this special milestone in Jacko’s life. There were equal parts hard work, studying, preparation, learning and growing to the counterparts of rejoicing, having fun, and joyous celebration. There were equal parts reflection, focus, contemplation and prayer to the counterpart of dancing, playing, DJ’ing and jumping into a bowl of cereal. This time around, I experienced the event from the other side of the lens, as our baby girl became a bat mitzvah. What an emotional rollercoaster it is to reach this milestone as a parent! This was not how they had planned on celebrating this day, but it did not stop them from making this celebration unforgettable despite the obstacles! Virtual connection united family and friends from near and far, even making it feel as though there was a little piece of Jerusalem with us. Joseph’s bar mitzvah celebration continued with a special car parade and surprise gifts for all. In this great pause that we are all experiencing, many things have had to either be postponed or cancelled. But for this special family, nothing was going to stand in the way of this celebration. Alexander’s calm and ease in which he conducted the ceremony was a direct reflection of his dedication and preparation for this day. It was an intimate gathering in person, but virually, hundreds joined with the use of Zoom and Facebook live. Homemade details represented the work of all the Schpilies. Elbow taps replaced hugs, empty spaces between everyone marked the importance of social distancing, masks covered smiles.... but nothing detracted from the simcha, pride and nachas of that day. On the contrary, there was something immensely symbolic and meaningful about the choice to celebrate despite the circumstances, gather despite the forced distance, rejoice even if together by a different definition. Mazal tov to Alexander and the Schpilberg Family for reminding us all about the true essence and meaning of this milestone.
